Hanthawaddy Airport is the new Yangon Airport that is still under construction. It’s currently due to open in 2019.
Yangon Airport was once the best in South East Asia. It was built in 1947 and saw its first major renovation in 2003. It is currently being renovated again to expand its capacity to cope with ever growing numbers.
Plans have been in place since 2001 to build a new airport at Bago, which is 80 kilometres from downtown Yangon. This new airport will be called Hanthawaddy Airport. Unfortunately, the large financial investments required have stalled several times and the contracts have been cancelled and re-tendered several times.
Currently, the project is set to complete in December 2019. You can read more information about the progress of Hanthawaddy Airport on its Wikipedia page.
